Today is the start of Blood Cancer Awareness Month and the kickoff of my #BingeWatchToEndBloodCancers Challenge! The $35 for my 35th birthday campaign was a huge success, and I could not have been more pleasantly surprised! Happy tears were definitely shed for the best birthday gifts a girl could ask for. Thank you to all of those who contributed!
Thanks to that effort, at this very moment, I stand in second place on the LA Light the Night fundraiser leaderboard. Just wow! And though I adore her, I can’t let the lovely Amanda Salas leapfrog me in the standings before the event on November 7 and so let’s watch some TV!
How is it already and only September btw…
The binge watching challenge:
During these pandemic times (and let’s be real – we always find time to binge watch some good TV) I know we have all been watching and listening to A LOT. I challenge you to pledge a donation for each episode, movie, podcast, book, etc that you enjoy between now and November 7th – the date of this year’s LA LTN celebration for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
How it works:
For example… if you pledge $10 per movie, you’ll raise an easy $80 for leisurely enjoying the entire Harry Potter series. If you go the TV route and pledge $2 per episode, you don’t have to feel any guilt if you blow through RHONY and the last few seasons of 90 Day FiancĂ© (one of my favorites). You will have raised $124!
Podcasts are another option if they’re more your thing. Generously donating $10 per episode would mean $50 for something like Nice White Parents, or $80 for the Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery series on The Explorers Podcast (highly recommended btw! especially if you are road tripping along their route like we just did from the Badlands National Park out west towards Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone).
Why play along?
Though many things have changed and been delayed, cancer has not been cancelled. If you’re wondering why blood cancers get a whole month, it is because EVERY TWELVE MINUTES FOUR PEOPLE in the United States are diagnosed with a blood cancer.
Every year, during September and with Light the Night events held near and far, funds and awareness are raised and elevated around the US for the 3rd deadliest type of cancer in the country. Conferences will educate, celebrations of survivors will be shared, and you will see buildings and ferris wheels across the country ‘Turn it Red‘ and be flooded in red light in honor of those of us impacted by the blood cancer. If you’re in DTLA today you’ll see the US Bank Tower light up for us! Here’s the link for other places you’ll see it happen.
I mean is there an easier or more enjoyable way to help fight for a cure and fo survivors’ support than to watch tv and donate?
How to join:
It’s simple! Shoot me an email at derswords@gmail.com or comment on my instagram post with your pledge. Please also let me know if you’re pledging to count until the Light the Night event on November 7 or for the duration of Blood Cancer Awareness Month (September). I’ll be checking in periodically until we hit our finish line!
